Aerococci urinae is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative, bacterium that grows in clusters, often appearing in colonies that resemble Streptococci viridans [ 1 ]. Its genus was first described in 1953, with the first reported case of A. urinae in a human described in 1992 [ 1, 2 ].

In the present study, penicillin susceptibilities were in agreement with these findings. Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. No standardized susceptibility test methods or interpretive criteria have been proposed for this organism. This In 2001 the clinically relevant species Aerococcus sanguicola [22], which was later renamed A. sanguinicola, was defined.

Aerococcus urinae (A.urinae) isanewcomer to clinical and microbiological practice. This bacterium is mainly associated with urinary tract infections (UTI) especially in elderly patients with predisposing conditions. A. urinae naturally is isolated from dust, air, vegetation, and hospital environments. 2017-09-21 Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. A. urinae, A. sanguinicola, and Aerococcus sp. were all susceptible to both penicillin and ceftriaxone. The majority of Aerococcus viridans and Aerococcus viridans/urinaeequi isolates were not susceptible to penicillin and Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice.

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. A. sanguinicola are catalase-negative, vancomycin-susceptible, gram-positive cocci arranged in clusters and tetrads, as are all Aerococcus species except A. christensenii (which is arranged in short chains). A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities. The mean patient age was 82 (range 24-101) years.

The most distinguishing characteristic of Aerococcus sp. is their gram stain morphology of large GPCs in This report describes the clinical sources and phenotypic characterization of 16 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola.Sixteen conventional tests were used to describe and differentiate the 16 isolates of A. sanguinicola from 30 strains of Aerococcus viridans, 27 strains of Aerococcus urinae, and a single strain each of Aerococcus christensenii and Aerococcus urinaehominis.

(2010). Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola, two frequently misidentified uropathogens. Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases: Vol. 42, No. 10, pp

Den första arten, A. viridans, beskrevs 1953 och kopplingar gjordes mellan den och en allvarlig sjukdom hos hummer. Det skulle dröja åtskilliga decennier innan nästa aerokockart, A. urinae, upptäcktes. The lack of standardized methods and interpretive criteria and the relatively small collections of isolates for some of the genera discussed in the chapter make it difficult to accurately assess antimicrobial susceptibility patterns.

Aerococcus urinae is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus. The bacterium is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. Isolates of this genus were originally isolated in 1953 from samples collected in the air and dust of occupied rooms and were distinguished by their tetrad cellular arrangements. [2]
